Crossbow

13th July 2005 Sandbanks Poole

An air of excitement hung heavy on this beautiful, hot and sunny Wednesday morning. Amplified as the scent of each square metre escaped from it’s freshly torn packaging. Languidly caressing every inch as we laid it bare on the sand. As we pumped, it rose in front of us. The vivid colours and futuristic shape in perfect harmony, set off by the sun kissed beach.

We are all dying to fly this new creation, an almost historical moment. It’s exciting, surprising and at the same time scary – the unknown. This kite has presence. Without a word passing our lips, the tourists present could see that something out of the ordinary was happening. Just how significant?

It’s blowing on-shore, we’ve got some sizable obstacles downwind, but Captain Corruption seems pleased with the choice of spot. Is safety no longer an issue? Once the bar has been pushed away the kite de-powers like you won’t believe (until you try it yourself, that is). And the re-launch – it’ll blow your mind, had us in fits of giggles.

Not enough breeze to get up and going but since we are all here I may as well try. A super-quick ride, but absolutely delicious. I should not be moving, but the kite is so fast it’s a pleasure to work. In my first timid run I try a back-loop kite-loop, forgetting to pull like a banshee, but the kite goes round, yet more smiles and applause from the beach. The walk back up the beach is effortless, this whole experience incredible.

Now we just need some real wind to see how the crossbow fares in that. But first impressions are brilliant. More to follow….
